Harold Houdijk is an audiovisual artist based in Rotterdam, NL. He studied and taught audiovisual design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam. Harold performed as a VJ for more than 10 years, and worked with and for internationally renowned DJs, performing custom made visuals during their tours and other music events.
What is most important to Harold in his art, is to try to work without a concept, and see where the materials and tools he uses lead him. The output is not fixed, nor is the inspiration or input for the artwork. The starting point can be something trivial like found footage, objects or other information – its essence revealed by the artist and his tools. This way seemingly random input generates seemingly random, yet very controlled output.
Harold expects an open mind from the viewers of his art. His main goal is to evoke emotions through his works, although he does not want to dictate the viewer’s reaction. The objective of his ongoing experimentations is to create l'art pour l’art – in his eyes the purest form of art. Art that only exists to let viewers have their own personal experience.
