Chinese artist Fang Lu (b.1981) works with both video and performance and explores the possible relationships between acting and the spectacle in combination with the moving image. She received her BFA in Graphic Design from the School of Visual Art, New York, in 2005, and her MFA from the San Francisco Arts Institute in 2007.

Her practice illustrates both sensitivity and drive while combining multiple genres. In her recent work Lovers Are Artists, for example, Fang Lu draws inspiration from Roland Barthes’ A Lover’s Discourse: Fragments: reworking Barthes theme of everyday banalities becoming subject alone, Fang Lu creates a visual reinterpretation where “petty actions of daily life transcend their ordinary context, and become (unintentional) and yet extremely determined actions in front of the camera”. She establishes an equilibrium between the documentary and narrative and transforms the trivialities of daily life into a conceptual, linguistic experiment.

Fang Lu’s work has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions; to name but a few: The 8 of Paths, Uferhallen, Berlin, 2014; 28 Chinese, Rubell Family Collection Museum, Miami, 2013; On/Off: China's Young Artists in Concept and Practice, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, 2013; Lost Seconds, Boers-li Gallery, Beijing, 2013; Lover and Artist, Pekin Fine Art Gallery, Hong Kong, 2013; Amorous Acts, Arrow Factory, Beijing, 2012; Eclipse, Borges Liberia Contemporary Art Institute, Guangzhou, 2011; Automatic Happening, A4 Cultural Arts Centre, Cheng Du, 2011; Unrecording, Space Station, Beijing, 2010. She has also participated in the Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale, 2012; and CAFAM Future Exhibition, 2012. Fang Lu is co-founder of Video Bureau, and independent video archive resource in Beijing and Guangzhou.

Fang Lu works and lives in Beijing.
