Biophonica is on a mission to create more advocates for our natural planet. Each location in every corner of our planet is home to thousands of different species, each with its own orchestra and chorus. These species produce melodic and rhythmic sound signatures that tell unique stories of heart, jeopardy, humor, awe, and emotion. To help tell these stories, Biophonica partners with The Listening Planet and world-leading natural history specialists, musicians, filmmakers, and artists. Together, they share a passion for putting nature center stage.
Biophonica is part of The Listening Planet family, both founded by famed audio naturalist Martyn Stewart and media icon Amanda Hill. Biophonica celebrates and honors the remarkable, interconnected natural world. Martyn Stewart has spent his lifetime recording the natural world, aiming to give a voice to what has long felt voiceless. His work, which captures the sonic landscapes of a disappearing world, has been featured in hundreds of documentaries, films, live experiences, and, more recently, albums, music, and animation.
Biophonica produces music, film, live performances, and experiences that blend the world of nature with the world of art and entertainment. By leveraging sound, music, and creativity, Biophonica believes it can create more advocates for the natural world. In partnership with The Listening Planet, Biophonica collaborates with world-leading musicians, creatives, and artists to tell nature’s stories through her own voice.
Martyn Stewart, co-founder of The Listening Planet and Biophonica, is a sound recordist, engineer, and activist known as the "David Attenborough of sound" by the BBC and National Geographic. Over his 58-year career, Martyn has built one of the largest personal living libraries of nature sounds, featuring more than 37,000 hours and nearly 100,000 stems from over 60 countries. Diagnosed with terminal cancer three years ago, he created The Listening Planet Foundation to donate his life’s work and inspire future generations of sound recordists, conservationists, stewards, artists, and advocates of the natural world.
Amanda Hill, co-founder and CEO of The Listening Planet and Biophonica, is a significant change agent and brand builder within the global media industry. Amanda has worked in media for the past 17 years, founding BBC Earth and later serving as the first global CMO for BBC Worldwide/Studios. She co-founded The Listening Planet and Biophonica to champion transformative, purpose-led ideas that inspire action to solve major issues facing our planet and society. Amanda believes that through the power of listening, there's an opportunity to awaken a connection deep inside all of us, fostering a love, joy, understanding, and respect for the importance and fragility of our home.
