Ulla Nolden

London and Düsseldorf

Ulla Nolden is a digital artist working at the intersection of art, design and technology. Her work investigates her perception of the subtleties of everyday reality through photography and algorithmic movement.

Nolden was brought up to be suspicious of art. Initially she became a motion designer, yet she remained intrigued by the philosophical questions raised by contemporary art. Having developed her own aesthetic through daily photographs, computer programming enabled her to fuse her motion design experience with an examination of her visual perception of movement.

Certain aspects of physical reality catch Nolden’s attention, and the process of this particular mode of perception has become the focus of her research. She sees static elements of her physical environment as a grid of lines, colours and textures.

By contrast, Nolden experiences the visual perception of movement as accumulative. Over time, observations of similar movements are layered to form one complete percept. As part of this process, the rules governing the movement are clarified. She translates those behavioural rules into computational instructions.

Ulla Nolden (b.1968, Germany) holds an MA in Computational Arts from Goldsmiths College, London. She lives and works in Düsseldorf and London.
