Kymatics

Form is always temporal (…). Sound (…) is the soul of form, which only comes alive through sound and which works from the inside out. Form is the outer expression of the inner content.

These words by Vassily Kandinsky, written in 1912, seem to perfectly encapsulate Samuele De Marchi's Kymatics series. Drawing inspiration from the purist, rational painting of Kazimir Malevich, De Marchi reimagines the Russian Suprematist's work as animated visualizations of musical compositions. In doing so, he breathes life into Malevich’s geometric forms, allowing them to convey an almost spiritual resonance—as if they were awakening to express their own soul.

Despite their differences, Kandinsky and Malevich both believed in the emotional and spiritual power of art, each seeking to free the canvas from mere representation. With Kymatics, De Marchi playfully bridges their visions, infusing Malevich’s solemn abstraction with the dynamic lyricism of Kandinsky through the lens of digital technology.
