Childhood Memories at Pearl Lam Galleries, Singapore

Yinka Shonibare MBE presents Childhood Memories, a solo exhibition at Pearl Lam Galleries, Singapore. The exhibition takes as its inspiration motifs and memories from the artist’s childhood in Nigeria and reflects on how memory formation, folklore and the ephemeral construction of culture sits within contemporary capitalism. The sculptural works and screen prints are inspired by Surrealism and Yoruba culture, with Shonibare’s signature batik fabrics a recurring aesthetic element.

Alongside the exhibition, Pearl Lam also presented an installation by Shonibare at Art Stage Singapore from 21-24 January 2016. The showcase featured installations installed near the entrance of the fairgrounds bringing together three works from his Invasion, Escape: Aliens do it right! series, alongside works by international contemporary artists Li Tianbing, Qin Yufen, Ben Quilty and Leonardo Drew in the Pearl Lam Galleries stand.

DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art in Montreal has published an exhibition notebook presenting high resolution videos and images of Shonibare’s exhibition Pièces de Résistance in the form of a free digital publication. Download the iBook for your iOS devices.

Childhood Memories is on from 21 January - 13 March 2016 at Pearl Lam Galleries, Singapore, 9 Lock Road #03-22, Gillman Barracks, Singapore, 108937.
