Sedition is the original platform for digital art, founded in 2011. Sedition is a platform for, and community of artists who work across a range of different media, but most especially produce work that can be viewed and presented in digital format. Sedition offers an opportunity for every artist to sell and present their work digitally to a diverse and unlimited global audience of collectors and art-lovers, without having to exclusively sign up to any one site, company, platform, or organisation. The artworks on Sedition are purely digital, they are not physical in nature. They exist for screens and devices and are accessed online - through the Internet. 

When you join Sedition, you’re joining a community of other artists and like-minded individuals around the world. The range of artists on Sedition is from the very well-established household names such as Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Yoko Ono, and Bill Viola right through to emerging and brand-new names that are just starting out and who you may never have heard of. The point of Sedition is that the entire landscape of contemporary art exists for our collectors and artists to dive in and explore.

Sedition is the ideal platform for every artist.

By joining Sedition, you put yourself in front of a well established and growing audience of between 500,000 to 1 million collectors. This community has evolved over the last 10 years and they are dedicated art-lovers, gallery and museum visitors, passionate collectors and new interests out to explore.. In addition, on Sedition, you’re not only visible to a global audience, but part of a community of fellow creators and artists. 

At Sedition we will never ask you as an artist to be exclusive on our site. In fact, we don’t want you to be exclusive to our site, we want you to be on as many platforms as you can get on - the better and more recognizable you are as an artist, the better it is for you and the better it is for us. We do want and need your artworks to be exclusive to Sedition - having the same artwork for sale in potentially different formats and prices would undermine the market, however, having different artworks of the same artist for sale in different locations is nothing but a good idea.

At Sedition, we not only offer you lots of soft skills, extra promotion and a chance to build a reputation and a profile in the world but we also provide you with multiple different revenue streams. An artist setting up on Sedition immediately has several separate revenue streams available to them. The intention is to allow artists to effectively monetise their work - and their back-catalogue - in order to free them up for other projects and new works.. All of the separate revenue streams as outlined below have fairly long tails and can deliver revenues from your back catalogue and enable you to be earning money whilst hard at work in the studio…or perhaps sitting on the beach in Panama and drinking piña coladas.

1. Artwork and edition sales: you will earn based on a 50/50 split between Sedition and the artist.

2. Public displays: public display earnings start on the basis of a 50/50 split, but are negotiated individually with our artists with transparency on who gets what.

N.B: In the case of fully public displays (such as street-facing screens), Sedition will always allow the artist a final say on whether or not they wish to proceed. We feel it is important to allow the artist curatorial control on how their works are seen in the world. 

3. Subscription revenue: Sedition shares 20% of subscription revenue with the artists. Artists are awarded proportionally based on how much their work has been viewed.

4. Commissions: Sedition always individually negotiates commissions between the client and the artist.

5. NFTs: Sedition has introduced an option for artworks released on the platform to be minted as NFTs. While artworks on Sedition are not sold directly as NFTs, they are offered with an option for collectors to mint their purchased editions as NFTs. Beyond the initial edition sales, you, as an artist, will earn 50% of the proceeds from secondary NFT trades.

Sedition has two platforms - an Open platform and a Curated platform. 

The Curated Platform is the default platform, it’s where you land when you first come to the site. This is where you’re going to find the names and the figures that you know and love - Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Yoko Ono, Bill Viola and many others. The only way artists get to be on the Curated Platform is when we invite them. It’s not an open forum, it is invitation only.

Alongside the Curated Platform, we have Open Platform. Open Platform is essentially the largest part of Sedition - it is open to the entire world, anyone around the globe, no matter how established or inexperienced they are, can sign up to Open Platform, present their work to the Sedition audience and start to build their profiles, revenue streams, collectors and audience. Open Platform is a free forum, you don’t need anything other than an email to start presenting your work there - so you, your art class, friends, colleagues, parents, siblings - absolutely ANY creator anywhere can sign up and start to present their work.

Open Platform is also a great springboard, as the Sedition team monitors it very carefully and regularly invites artists from Open Platform across to Curated - sometimes depending on the audience that they’ve gathered, sometimes depending on the sales that they’ve got, and sometimes just depending on how much our curatorial team like the work.

There are numerous different avenues towards becoming a curated artist on Sedition. 

Artists can and frequently do reach out to us and present their work and express an interest in joining Sedition. In these instances, our curatorial team will review the submission and come back to the artist ASAP.

Alternatively, Sedition will sometimes proactively contact artists that we admire. If we go to an exhibition, a museum show or some display of works and there’s an artist whose work we love and they’re not on the site, then we’ll reach out and invite them to be on the site. 

To sum up, there’s no single formal process, we at Sedition are very ad-hoc, very approachable, very friendly and we all live and breathe art - so we’re always in and around exhibitions, museums and art displays here, there and everywhere :)

Once you get there, follow the instructions on the screen, create your profile, upload your works and start presenting and selling your works to our audience - the world is your oyster!

For still images, we support JPEG or PNG. One side must be at least 3000 pixels.

For videos we support MOV, MPEG or MP4 as well 3GP, ASF, AVI, DV, FLV, MKV, MXF, OGG, RM, VOB, WEBM. We also accept most codecs with our preferred codec being H.264. Please avoid using Apple Intermediate, ProRes 4444 (ProRes 422 Supported), HDV 720p60, Go2Meeting3 (G2M3), Go2Meeting4 (G2M4), ER AAC LD (Error Resiliant, Low-Delay variant of AAC) and REDCODE. The resolution needs to be 1920x1080 or higher. 

Since Sedition offers public displays, we ask that the artwork files submitted to us are in the best resolution possible. Most artworks on Sedition are now in 4K. There’s no upper limit on how large the artwork file you upload can be, however, files larger than several gigabytes will take a while to upload and process. 

The short answer is - it’s entirely up to you! Our audience does have some preferences, though :)

The longest form piece on Sedition is about an hour. This is fairly unusual though, with most works on Sedition being 5 minutes or less. We find the audience gravitates towards slightly shorter form pieces rather than long-play forms.  That said, the most significant driver is the popularity and quality of a given work rather than its duration. 

However, there are in fact one or two GIFs on the site. Our advice is to simply make the work that most interests you, the artist. 

So in summary - moving image artworks tend to be at least 30 seconds and usually less than 5 minutes, although there are many successful exceptions to both of these timescales.

In addition to your work, you will also need to upload your picture as well as your digital signature. 

For the signature, it needs to be either in JPG or PNG. We will use your signature to issue certificates of authenticity to buyers of your works. 

Your profile image needs to be in JPG or PNG format, be maximum 5 mb and at least 400x400 pixels.

Within one month after the close of each quarter,  Sedition provides artists a quarterly statement that breaks down website sales and subscription revenues. If there were no sales during that quarter, you won't receive a statement.

In addition to quarterly reports, Sedition provides an annual statement for public display revenues. If your artworks weren't showcased in any public displays over the previous year, you won't get this annual statement. Commission rates are determined on a case-by-case basis and are paid separately.

Payments are automatically routed to your designated bank account using our automated payment system. Do note that payouts are not made until the end of the respective quarter (or year) and after you've received your quarterly (or annual) statement.

You don't need to provide an invoice. Thanks to our automated payment system, payments are dispatched quarterly without requiring an invoice.

Your payments are handled either through Stripe or Wise, based on your country of residence, and are deposited into the bank account you've registered with us.

To set up automated payments:

• Log into your artist account.
• Update your address by selecting your country here
• After updating, navigate to the "Payout methods" tab and follow the prompts to onboard either Stripe or Wise.

If you're VAT registered, your invoices and statements will reflect that. If you're not VAT registered, they won't.

Based on your country of residence, Sedition directs artist payouts through either Stripe or Wise. Regardless of the chosen payment processor, funds will be transferred to the bank account you've designated for automated payments.

Starting from 2023, we no longer support PayPal for any payouts.

This is an important point and more and more relevant in the digital age. Sedition aligns with UK - which is now global - law on this issue. Sedition sells artworks, subscription to the artworks and offers companies and corporations Public Display Licenses. Copyright resides with the artist, it is not sold or transferred along with the artwork. Unless you, the artist, specifically choose to sign away the copyright, it resides with you.

The same applies to public display licenses - they are usage rights for artworks for public display. They specify, how, when, for how long and in which location and context the owner of the license can use the artwork. Our Public Display Licenses contain strict boundaries on the times, uses and dissemination of the artworks.

In summary -  the copyright stays with the artist - you’re not signing it away by being part of Sedition. 

If you have created this work yourself, then you do have the rights to the work. 

However, if you are using other people’s imagery, film, music, soundtracks or anything else in your work that was not created by you, then you do need to make sure that you have the full rights before the work lands on Sedition. 

No, not for any commercial or fiscal purpose.

Collectors are not allowed to reproduce your work unless you authorize it.

There are numerous ways to view the artworks on Sedition. 

One of the things that Sedition prides itself on is that first and foremost, we are an art company. We’re not here just to enable speculation or investments, it’s about art and artists.

Collectors are provided with a continually updated, maintained and ever-growing suite of apps: iOS app, Android app, Google Chromecast app, Apple TV app, LG smart TV app. Soon to come are Samsung Smart TV app, Sony Smart TV app, Roku app, Amazon Firestick app and a desktop app. We provide all of these so that a collector has an opportunity to view the work as an artwork - not just a computer file in an odd context. Collectors are able to, and generally do, enjoy these works as proper displays, as artworks. The devices they use are anything connected to the Internet that can display digital media.

The original file you provide Sedition is put onto our server and then anyone who’s streaming that artwork will be requesting a stream of that work from the server. Note that they’re requesting a stream and not a file itself, which stays on Sedition’s server.

In the case of certain public displays, once the artworks are protected as per the legal agreement, Sedition may provide the files to display partners. However, Sedition thoroughly protects these and our legal team guarantees the safety of the files. Sedition further monitors all of our agreements and ensures proper adherence to the contract and the terms and conditions from all our display partners.

Yes, you absolutely can, in fact - we want you to! :)

The artwork should never be for sale anywhere else if it’s for sale on Sedition, but it should absolutely be available for people to see and experience - preferably with the link sending them back to Sedition where they can purchase it.

Yes, once your initial term has run out, you can stop working with us. If any of your artworks are not sold-out, you can stop the sale of any remaining editions and we will no longer offer your artwork for licensing, subscription or other monetisation. If your artistic direction has changed and you feel that your old work no longer represents what you are doing, you are of course free to display and offer the work you feel best represents your practice.

However - and this is important: it is NOT possible to remove works that have already been sold. They no longer belong to you, the artist, they belong to the collectors who bought them. Similar to how an artist who sold their work cannot go to someone’s house to take back the painting hanging on their wall, an artist cannot take back someone’s digital property for which they paid. Please also be aware that if your artwork has been purchased by a collector, then the artist and artwork pages remain on the site as a resource for the collector - even if the artist is no longer working with Sedition.

So in summary - yes, you can stop the sale of future editions if you want to, but you’re not able to remove the record of the sold editions, since they belong to the collectors. It is important to note that the artist profile description and the artwork information page must remain on the site as a resource for the collectors who purchased those works.

In our experience, however, having dealt with many artists whose artistic direction changed, our advice is - don’t remove your old works. Even if you may feel that your old works are a complete anathema to who you are now, they are a part of your journey as an artist, they add value to your future works as part of your story. 

Yes, you can replace a previous artwork that you put onto Sedition. However, as mentioned in the previous answer, even if just one edition of the artwork is sold, it is impossible to remove the record of the artwork completely. 

It is possible to stop future sales and it is also possible to offer your collectors an upgraded or remastered version of an existing work, but previously sold artworks must stay as they are with the artwork information page also in place - after all, that is what collectors paid for and it would be as unethical for Sedition to remove or replace works in people’s Vault as it would be to change a painting on the wall of someone’s house without their permission. 

While at Sedition we in no way limit the platforms you can present yourself on - in fact, we encourage you to be on as many platforms as you can be - artworks must be exclusive. Having the same artwork on two or more platforms would potentially undermine the trust in the market and in the concept of a digital limited edition, therefore the artworks do need to be exclusive.

So, the same artist on different platforms is a big YES, the same artwork on different platforms is a big NO. This is, of course, notwithstanding the possibility of selling Sedition artworks on the secondary market on other marketplaces such as OpenSea (for example).
