A new exhibition of artworks by Philip Colbert is on display at Saatchi Gallery, London from 18 December 2018 to 14 January 2019. Hunt Paintings is presented by Unit London and is the largest solo exhibition by Colbert in the UK to date.
Curated by Sasha Craddock and presented across three large gallery spaces, the exhibition features 25 new works. These include a new, large scale painting series, a new series of sculptures, and an immersive experience in Colbert’s cartoon universe via virtual reality.
"I am very excited to be holding my largest show to date at Saatchi Gallery, in collaboration with the amazing team at Unit London. Saatchi Gallery is a brilliant platform for my new large-scale works, which reflect the hyper saturation of our culture and our crazy, ferocious appetite for image consumption."
- Philip Colbert
Boar Hunt II, 2018
Celebrated as ‘the Godson of Andy Warhol’, Philip Colbert’s celebrated work is heavily influenced by the Pop art movement. Packed with the colour, vibrancy and energy of pop art, Colbert’s work is also emphatically part of the internet age. A common theme of his work is the playful subversion of the familiar and traditional. This is evidenced frequently by of the works on display in Hunt Paintings. Many of which are inspired by the composition of Old Masters paintings and strikingly infused with contemporary symbols, logos and icons. The image over-saturation of the contemporary world is tied in with the grand narratives of the Old Masters and also with the banal - toothpaste logos sit alongside giant lobsters, fierce warriors are watched by puzzled emojis.
