Liu Ye as a painter is celebrated for his unique style that is both reflective and naive and which connects Eastern and Western cultural influences. Born in Beijing, Liu has developed his signature style through experiences in China, Germany and the Netherlands. Liu brings together influences of Western artists (in particular Mondrian) and traditional Chinese master painters and scenes from his childhood in Beijing that come together in his oeuvre. His works combine formal composition, philosophy and fable to reflect on human nature. He explains, "Fairytales are full of imagination and sensitivity whereas philosophy requires strict and rational thinking. Fairytales and philosophy represent two extreme poles of thinking. My paintings roam between these poles..."

Liu Ye supported in full the production of the publication, which brings together the work of over 100 collectors, institutions and other art professionals. The book includes essays by Paul Moorhouse of The National Portrait Gallery, London, art critic Zhu Zhu, and Philip Tinari of Ullens Center of Contemporary Art, Beijing.
