A group exhibition at the National Museum of China celebrates the meeting of the arts and sciences in the field of Artificial Intelligence. 

Running from 2 to 30 November, AS-Helix: Art and Science Integration in the Age of Artificial Intelligence is presented by the National Museum and Tsinghua University. The exhibition features over 120 works by international artists including fuse* Refik Anadol, Onformative, teamlab and Tobias Gremmler and focuses on the potential of Artificial Intelligence as a catalyst for new and thought-provoking interactions between art and science.

AS-Helix is part of a series of events marking the fifth year of The Art and Science International Exhibition (TASIES), an annual project initiated in 2001 by Tsinghua. The annual event looks at interdisciplinary collaboration between the arts and sciences.

As part of the exhibition fuse* present a site-specific iteration of their multi-screen installation Multiverse, which won the Wu Guanzhong Award for Art and Science Innovations at the AS-Helix opening ceremony. The work generates digital paintings in real-time, creating an immersive audiovisual environment which explores the possibility of the ‘Multiverse’ - of infinite coexisting parallel universes. 

Refik Anadol, Archive Dreaming

Refik Anadol presents Archive Dreaming, a work commissioned by SALT Research collections and originally shown at SALT Galata in 2017. The piece works with SALT’s archive of 1,700,000 document; using machine learning algorithms, Anadol and collaborator Mike Tyka have created a temporary immersive space which combines archive and architecture. The installation, when idle, ‘dreams’ of links between archive documents. The work “intertwines history with the contemporary, and challenges immutable concepts of the archive, while destabilizing archive-related questions with machine learning algorithms.” (refikanadol.com).

Elsewhere in the exhibition space, onformative present their multi-screen installation Meandering River. Accompanied by an AI-generated soundscape by kling klang klong, onformative’s visuals combine satellite imagery, graphic design and custom algorithms. Combined, the sounds and visuals express the character of rivers and their impact on the surrounding land. Meandering River has been shown internationally during 2019 including at Google I/O, Mountain View, Ars Electronica, Linz, Scopitone Festival, Nantes and Design Society, Shenzen.
