A chilling exploration into the human psyche, The FEAR Quartet emerges as a profound artistic anthology crafted by the renowned artist, John Sanborn. Rooted in an incisive examination of an emotion that has ceaselessly haunted humanity—fear—this collection unfolds as a narrative of introspective disquiet, stitched together by technology and imagination.
In this quartet, fear is a primal, omnipresent force that simmers, pervasive and inescapable, through the corridors of our consciousness. For our ancestors, fear was a vigilant savior, shrouding them as they clung to survival in the ruthless embrace of the wild. In the present, it masquerades through our lives, shaping our actions and nudging us towards the precipice of our ethical and moral boundaries.
Each work in The FEAR Quartet was forged through a meticulous process, intertwining the artist's intuition with machine imagination. Utilizing a custom AI text/image/video application, media inputs are modified and extended using text prompts, enabling them to be molded into “storyboard” style scenes, adjustable via over 200 command line variables. This blending of artist and technology allows the pieces to navigate through a tangible digital universe, reflecting on the emotion that historically and contemporaneously binds us: fear.
The FEAR Quartet is not merely an artistic collection but an immersive experience, guiding audiences through a journey that explores, contemplates, and, ultimately, faces the fears that linger ever-present in the recesses of our beings.
Because we were prey, the downside of fear is that it feels like home - because we expected to be eaten. Fear kept us alive as we huddled in caves and yurts. Even after we fashioned weapons and taught ourselves the value of violence, fear remained a dark hole into which our souls could disappear. Fear is the mind-killer, a cause of flaws, failure, and religion. - John Sanborn
