Naturalised 1 - Still

Naturalised 1 is the first artwork in the Naturalised collection by Graham Fudger. It features Dahlias in the garden at Anglessey Abbey in Cambridge

Naturalised, the new 4K UHD video series from Graham Fudger, explores the world as seen through the eyes of various species. While human vision evolved over millions of years, our trichromatic view captures only a narrow range of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun.

Apes and gorillas share our red, green, and blue-sensitive vision, while dogs see fewer warm colors and perceive more ultraviolet light. Cats, on the other hand, have superior night vision, with retinas better suited to detecting movement. Bees even have a monochromatic eye at the back of their heads to help with spatial orientation.

Using high-resolution images shot throughout the summer, Graham adapts them in Photoshop, then assembles the footage in Final Cut Pro. He applies a graduated transitional hue effect to suggest how different species might perceive the natural world.

By referencing the roughly eight million species alive today—just one percent of all species that have ever existed—Graham acknowledges that these videos are far from comprehensive. However, they serve as a starting point for understanding our place within the wider evolutionary scale.
