Claudia Hart’s Les Petites Romantiques is a collection of animated pieces honouring the spirit of musician Serge Gainsbourg in the 1970s and his partners Jane Birkin and fellow actress Brigitte Bardot. The works contemplate the ephemerality of ‘l’amour tristesse’ on the internet; love as a thirty second interval in a digital age which, with a little luck, sometimes loops. In Hart’s animations there is a sense of the artist subverting the original sentiment of the sonnet to create a sensation likened to a kind of branding. Our emotions are given over to the appetite of the audience as the artist rationalises romanticism as an overwhelming energy that deserves our unblinkered attention.
