In The Travels of Mariko Horo: Mermaids in the Piazza, part of The Travels of Mariko Horo collection, Tamiko Thiel takes viewers on a fantastical journey beneath the surface of Venice's iconic Piazza. This machinima, originating from Thiel's VR installation The Travels of Mariko Horo, showcases a lively group of mermaids, their design influenced by Shiba Kōkan's interpretation of Western mermaid imagery. These animated figures, rendered in vibrant jewel tones, occupy the Piazza's submerged end, near the Palace of the Dragon King (Basilica San Marco) and the Opal Palace (Palazzo Ducale). The artwork captures a whimsical underwater spectacle, with the Campanile serving as a symbolic elevator connecting this submerged world to the reality above.
