Ayni is an artwork by Susie Olczak, part of the Channeling Water collection. Ayni was filmed in Chile and across the border at Laguna Colorado in Bolivia in 2023. The title means 'reciprocity' in Kunza, the native language of the Lickan Antay community, who have inhabited the Atacama Desert region for over 10,000 years. This film celebrates their unique way of life, particularly focusing on their nomadic existence and the ceremonial acts performed upon arriving at new locations, asking Mother Earth for protection and promising to care for their new environments.
The Atacama Desert, with its breathtaking landscapes of salt lagoons, ancient cacti, and rainbow-colored rocks, faces ecological challenges due to historical nitrate mining and contemporary copper and lithium extraction, compounded by the presence of a massive pile of disused fast fashion. Despite some areas having no recorded rainfall, the film showcases the resilience of the Lickan Antay community and the natural world around them. Olczak captures the region’s vibrant colors and intricate irrigation systems, highlighting how life flourishes in the oasis of Coyo through traditional knowledge and sustainable practices.
