“virtual sarong spirit” 1
The “virtual sarong spirit” 1 (2019) is reflecting religious ideas of Indonesia (Bali) and the Netherlands (as past colonizer), intertwining ideas of “enlightenment”, spiritual grow, (un)balanced powers visualized and symbolized in a sarong like “virtual textile”. Slowly animated with soundscape of the sea shore, Balinese gamelan (gender wayang) like instruments, church bells, ritual and nature sound in a dualistic relation creating historical tensions and kind of meditation instantly. Although part of sonic heritage and interwoven colonial history the work can be experienced through contemporary perspectives of mixed cultures with sharing and still sometimes conflicting identities.
