Host is a new moving image artwork by Paul Benney. The work is part of a series of digitally augmented paintings by the artist brought to life with video/digital editing. The title refers to the lord of Hosts which is sometimes ascribed to God in the the Bible. Elsewhere in the Bible it is also used to describe the celestial movement of the stars.
"Although I am not associated with any orthodox religion, I find the language and imagery of religious texts a great source of poetic and artistic inspiration." - Paul Benney.
Host is a celebration of the spiral, a form which connects the universal and the mundane. The spiral is a sacred symbol that represents the journey and change of life as it unfolds; taking a labyrinth-like passage that leads to Source. It symbolises connection to God and the energy of the cosmos.
Spirals can represent harmony, beginning, concentration, and focus. They can be used to expand, connect, and develop the mind. Spirals represent journey, direction, and progress. They visually and spatially reference the journey to transcendence, oblivion, or home.
