Originally created for a contemporary opera Code L, Lamento merges an androgynous figure with images of water, resembling a rainstorm. Human torment is reflected in environmental distress, perhaps lamenting a loss of a loved one. But likely their sadness is even deeper, concerning a lack of connection to community, to nature, to themselves.
Inspired by fragments of Lover's Discourse by Roland Barthes, which claims that a real connection between lovers is all but impossible in our advanced stage of Western Modernity, the video expands the theme of romantic connection to the widespread alienation of the contemporary human.
