'Free Will' is part of a long series of photographs resulting from a dialogue between media with procedures of digital manipulation, printing and collage. Alternating both digital and geometric processes with the chance of collage and pictorial intervention, the work discusses the complex nature of freedom, dependent on the conflict between emotion and reason.
STATEMENT
Serial works emerged from the experience with ‘Free Will’, the culmination of my digital production in the 2013-15 period. Presented as a panel, the work transcends the figural character of photography, touching on the most sensorial and material dimension of painting. First was the drastic reduction of the elements of the image: only the birds, tiny on the horizon, surrounded by fields of intense color. With this, a trap was created: as I could not decide on which hues were more pleasing, I ended up opting for all of them at the same time.
Contemplating the trial prints on the table, I realized the strength of the ensemble. From a distance, color dominates, smoothing the geometry. Up close the birds multiply in subtle variations, in a game of similarities and differences between the parts and the whole. 'Free Will' is presented in sets of 2, 4, 9, 12 or 16 object photographs, which can be arranged in innumerable combinations. In the various exhibitions in which he participated (2016, 2019 and 2020), it was presented even in asymmetric arrangements with up to 24 pieces.
