The evolutionary purpose of memory is clear - to store information that can be used and passed along to future generations. What is the purpose of reverie? Often private, often pleasurable, often escapism. These moments are fleeting, but have a dark allure. They invite us to keep returning to moments we can no longer inhabit, asking us to abandon the future in favor of a gilded past. They poison our desire to affect change, by suggesting it will never be that good again.
