BELLS is an audiovisual artwork by Jaap Drupsteen in which a sober sequence of chords drives pulsating movements of bristle-like elements.
The sound is like metallic bells. The audio reference runs counter to the visual - hair does not ring like bells - and yet the synchrony unites these incongruous sensations. Our brain connects auditory and visual events that occur simultaneously into one acceptable perception, even if the sensory input may seem at odds with itself.
This ongoing sequence of hairy elements in sync with a susurrating rhythm creates a sense of serenity. This work can be played as an endless loop.
