Tzimtzum is a video artwork by Darryl Rogers released as part of Spinland.
Tzimtzum is a collaborative work between Rogers and Australian composer Ian Chia, specifically designed for planetariums - circular, immersive cinemas. The concept behind Tzimtzum explores a series of paradoxical ideas, including the notion that the universe we know today is the outcome of a cosmic negation. According to Lurianic Kabbalah, the world is not a creation from nothingness, but rather a form of nothingness resulting from the concealment of the only true reality, God. Similar to a film image projected on a screen, the world exists in its details and particulars only as a result of the partial occultation of what would otherwise be pure and homogenous light.
Tzimtzum expands on the Spinland theme and moves towards a narrative structure, offering an immersive experience for the viewer.
